Proposals and micro weddings on the Gold Coast: Why the water works
The biggest moments don't need the biggest crowd. A proposal with the right people close by, or a wedding with a short guest list, often means more than something larger and louder.
If you're planning either on the Gold Coast, the Broadwater deserves a place on your shortlist. Here's how a private boat works for both, and how to plan it.
Proposing on a private boat
A proposal on the water takes care of the two things most people worry about: privacy and setting.
Nobody else is on board, so there are no strangers watching and no one walking into the shot. And you don't need to find the perfect spot, because the Broadwater, the skyline and the light at golden hour are already there.
Some ways couples do it:
Just the two of you, then the party. Propose early in the cruise, then pick up friends and family at the marina, or have them waiting below deck, to celebrate straight after.
The surprise cruise. Your partner thinks it's a birthday or a day out with friends. Everyone else is in on it.
Sunset and a quiet moment. Time it for golden hour, then let the celebration roll into dinner and music on deck.
Captain Kenny has hosted plenty of celebrations and is happy to help you plan the timing, whether that's where to stop or when to cue the music.
What is a micro wedding?
A micro wedding is a full wedding with a short guest list, usually 30 people or fewer. You still have the ceremony, the vows, the dinner and the speeches. There are just fewer people, so every detail gets more attention.
A private boat suits it well. It feels full with 20 guests, and the whole day happens in one place.
What a wedding on board looks like
The ceremony. Guests board at Marina Mirage, Main Beach, and you say your vows on the foredeck with the water around you.
Golden hour. Drinks and photos as the sun drops across the Broadwater.
The celebration. Dinner, speeches and your music on the sound system, with room to dance on deck.
Back to shore. You step off at the marina, and the night is still yours.
The boat works for the days around the wedding too: a welcome cruise for guests who've travelled, or a slow recovery cruise the day after.
Styling on the water
Styling on a boat comes with one obvious question: what holds up to sun and a sea breeze?
That's where Preserved For You comes in. They're a Gold Coast wedding planning, styling and floral studio, and they're our preferred partner for celebrations on board. Their preserved florals don't need water, they look fresh all day, and you keep them for years afterwards. That makes them a natural fit for a proposal you'll want to remember, or a wedding on deck.
You can work with them on florals and styling alone, or have them bring together the rest of your wedding, from the celebrant to the photographer. Horizon is also listed on their Venues We Love page, and you can browse their wedding packages for ideas.
Captain Kenny arranges early boarding with you before the day, so the boat is styled before your guests, or your partner, step on.

How to plan it
Lock in the date and your numbers. The boat carries up to 30 people, including your celebrant, photographer and anyone else working on the day.
Plan around the light. An evening cruise puts golden hour right in the middle of the moment.
Choose your styling. Talk to Preserved For You about florals and how to dress the boat.
Sort the food and drinks. Bring your own, or book through our catering partners.
For a wedding, book your celebrant early. A small wedding still needs the same legal paperwork, and good celebrants fill up fast.
Questions people ask
Can you propose on a private boat on the Gold Coast?
Yes. Horizon is a private cruise, so it's just you and the people you invite. Captain Kenny can help you plan the timing so the moment lands where you want it.
Can you legally get married on a boat on the Gold Coast?
Yes. An authorised celebrant can marry you on board, and it's every bit as legal as a ceremony on land. Your celebrant handles the paperwork.
How many guests can come?
Up to 30, including your celebrant, photographer and any suppliers. That's our licensed maximum.
Can we decorate the boat?
Yes. Captain Kenny arranges early boarding before your cruise, so you or Preserved For You can style it before anyone arrives.
What about food and drinks?
Bring your own, or book catering through our partners. Catering is booked and paid directly with the caterer.
What if the weather turns?
Captain Kenny watches conditions in the lead-up and talks you through your options. The full policy is in our terms and conditions.
