Every enquiry we get starts the same way: "Can we hire the boat for a birthday?" The answer's always yes. But what people actually want to know is whether it's worth it, how much it costs, and whether their group will fit. Here's the honest version.

What does birthday boat hire on the Gold Coast actually involve?

When you hire a private catamaran for a birthday, you're booking exclusive use of the vessel. No other groups. No strangers. Just your people on the water. With Horizon Cat, that means a Seawind 1160 Deluxe catamaran with capacity for up to 30 guests, departing from Marina Mirage, 74 Seaworld Drive, Main Beach QLD 4215. The crew comes with it. So does all the safety kit, the sound system, swim platform, lily mat, and paddleboards. What you bring: your people, your food, your drinks. BYO is fully welcome. We've got large eskies, fridges, and freezers to keep everything cold.

How many people can actually join?

Up to 30 guests. That covers most birthday groups, whether you're keeping it tight with close friends or going bigger for a milestone. The Seawind 1160's wide beam means even a full group of 30 never feels crowded. There's proper deck space, shade when you need it, and enough room for people to split into smaller conversations without losing the group energy. For groups over 30, get in touch and we'll talk through the options.

How long should you hire the boat for?

Charters start from three hours, which works well for a tighter schedule. Long enough to get out on the Broadwater properly, drop anchor for a swim stop, and settle into the day without anyone running out of steam. Four hours is the sweet spot for most birthday groups. You get the swim stop, a proper cruise, time to eat and drink well, and that golden window at the end where everyone's in the best mood of the day. Half-day charters are available for groups that want to make a proper day of it, particularly good for milestone birthdays or groups coming from interstate.

What does birthday boat hire on the Gold Coast cost?

Pricing depends on charter length and group size. The most useful way to think about it: when you split the total across your group, the per-person cost is often comparable to a dinner out. But you get the whole vessel, a crew entirely focused on your group, and a day most people have never done. Check current pricing and availability here.

What's the best time of year to book?

The Gold Coast Broadwater is excellent year-round. The water is sheltered and calm in any season, and the climate means outdoor cruising is comfortable most of the year. That said, October through April is peak season: warm water, long daylight hours, and ideal conditions for swim stops. These months book fast, particularly on weekends and around school holidays. If you're planning a birthday between October and April, book at least 4 to 6 weeks in advance. Midweek charters are easier to secure and often more relaxed. Midweek specials available here.

Is birthday boat hire good for mixed groups?

Yes. This is one of the things we hear most from repeat customers. The boat works for all ages and energy levels. The layout gives people options. Those who want to be in the sun, music up, that's there. Those who want shade, a quieter corner, a proper conversation—that's also there. Kids do well because the water is calm and shallow at the swim stops. Older guests appreciate that there's no noise, no crowds, no one rushing them. When a group has people who don't know each other well, the charter usually fixes that within the first hour. Being on a boat together does something a venue doesn't.

How do you actually book?

Bookings are made online through Rezdy. If you'd prefer to talk through what works best for your group first—particularly for milestone birthdays, surprise parties, or large groups: get in touch directly and we'll help you figure out the right option before you commit. We depart from Marina Mirage, 74 Seaworld Drive, Main Beach QLD 4215. View the location on Google Maps.

What's included in the charter?

Professional skipper and crew, BBQ and catering facilities, sound system, paddleboards, lily pad, restrooms, and shaded areas. See the full vessel details here. If you want catering beyond BYO, we've partnered with In Season Catering for chef-on-board or pre-ordered platters. Catering options available here.

Can we swim off the boat?

Yes. We have great beach-stop destinations around Wave Break Island and South Stradbroke. You can pull up on the beach, swim, paddleboard, or lounge on the lily mat in protected, clean, and safe waters. Learn more about Gold Coast destinations.
